What Halo 3 has done to gamers

Halo 3 is the concluding chapter in the trilogy of games about humanity confronting multiple alien enemies in a galactic conflict.

The environments, which range from the natural to the industrial, look great in high-definition, and the Xbox 360's processing power makes for a seamless transition between gameplay and cinematics.

In terms of gameplay, the smooth control scheme is back, so within minutes you'll have a good grip on moving Master Chief and firing weapons; some new firearms make the havoc more intense. There are also new vehicles–these are most fun when playing with friends, because while one of you drives, up to three others can operate the weapons mounted on the vehicle.

Halo 3 allows for co-op play by up to four people, either on the same console or over Xbox Live. By enabling scoring in this mode, you earn points for killing enemies and lose points when a comrade dies.

Although Halo 3 doesn't advance the first-person-shooter genre, it has raised the bar in terms of FPS multiplayer play: up to 16 people can play over a network (either Xbox Live or a local area network). In itself, this isn't exciting, but Bungie's developers have added a new dimension to multiplayer with Forge, which allows players to become omniscient level editors during a battle, meaning that players can change the environment or its parameters mid-game.

At the end of Halo 3, we finally learn the name–the first name, anyway–of Master Chief, Spartan 117. In fact, you'll want to watch the final credit roll for the movie sequence that follows; otherwise, you won't see the actual ending of the game. Bungie has said that this may be the final game in this story line, but not necessarily the final game in the Halo universe. There is great material still to be mined.

Halo 3 is available in three versions: the standard version, with a copy of the game only; the limited edition, with the game and a bonus disc of "making of" featurettes; and the legendary edition, with the game, the bonus disc, and a third disc of remastered, high-definition versions of all of the film sequences from the first two games and a sculpture of Master Chief's helmet. Rated mature.
