Omar Khadr keeps Afghanistan and child soldiers in the news

Canadian citizen Omar Khadr was captured in Afghanistan in 2001. Since then, the debate has raged both in Canada and the U.S., (though mostly in Canada,) on how to treat the man. That is because Khadr was only 15 years old at the time of his capture.

Today, he remains detained at the infamous U.S. detention facility Guantanamo Bay, where he stands accused of war crimes.

This Sunday (November 19), 60 Minutes will air a feature story on Khadr. According to a video preview of the segment, the story will highlight the debate of whether or not Khadr should be treated as a child soldier.

In June 2007, the Straight ran a feature story that asked the same question.

Khadr is the only Canadian-born juvenile ever to be tried for adult war crimes in Canada’s history.
