Will the Pickton verdict spur governments to proceed with the Native Youth Centre in East Van?

The jury's verdict is in, and Robert William Pickton has been found guilty on six counts of second-degree murder.

But will the federal and provincial government continue to be guilty of wilful neglect of urban aboriginal youth in Vancouver?

A disproporationate number of the missing women were Native. The Urban Native Youth Association has come up with a brilliant proposal to prevent other aboriginal kids from falling into an abyss in the future.

For years, UNYA has been trying to raise funds for a youth centre for Native kids on the city's East Side. Petro Canada and the City of Vancouver have set aside land in the 2700-block of East Hastings.

But the Stephen Harper and Gordon Campbell governments have refused to deliver any funding, despite sitting on whopping surpluses. They're preparing next year's budget, and now is as good a time as any to deal with the lack of services for aboriginal youths in Vancouver. For more on this issue, go here.
