Pickton sentenced to life, no parole for 25 years

UPDATE: CBC News is reporting that Pickton has received the maximum penalty - life in jail - with no parole eligibility for 25 years. According to CBC, Justice James Williams said:

"Mr. Pickton's conduct was murderous and repeatedly so. I cannot know the details but I know this: What happened to them was senseless and despicable," said Williams, who read out the names of the six victims. "Mr. Pickton, there is really nothing I can say to express the revulsion the community feels about these killings."

Robert William Pickton, guilty on six counts of second-degree murder, faces sentencing today in BC Supreme Court.

Pickton - the Port Coquitlam pig farmer found guilty on Sunday in the deaths of Sereena Abotsway, Mona Wilson, Andrea Joesbury, Brenda Ann Wolfe, Georgina Faith Papin, and Marnie Frey - faces six automatic life sentences for the charges. Today, Justice James Williams will decide how long Pickton must serve before he can be considered for parole.

Justice Williams will first hear from the families themselves; their victim-impact statements, delivered to Pickton directly, will inform the judge's decision.

Pickton has 30 days to appeal the jury's verdicts. He'll also be back in court on January 17 to determine a date for the next trial, in which he'll face up to 20 more murder charges in relation to the activities on his Port Coquitlam farm.
