Bitter fruit goes into Israeli wines

It might interest your readers to know that the “new-generation Israeli wines” that Jurgen Gothe was promoting [“Israeli wines take a big, bold leap forward”, Feb. 14-21] are, literally, fruit from the vines of Israeli occupation. We recently sent a letter to the B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch on this very subject, which they have responded to, claiming this matter is not under their “jurisdiction” and that they offer products on a commercial-demand basis. Unfortunately, the BCLDB and, now, your Jurgen Gothe (hopefully unknowingly) are aiding and abetting an illegal occupation and hindering the chances for any future genuine peace in the region.

During the 8 months I recently spent in the West Bank, I encountered numerous of the many instances of settlers taking over Palestinian land.

One example:

The soldiers and settlers themselves admit they have no ownership of the land and that the main objective is revenue from wine sales.

[see minutes: 3:15, 3:32, 4:20, 4:30, 6:52]

The Israeli army defends the illegal settler's stealing of the land with a logic that is circular, absurd, and contradictory.

The Palestinians in question are some of many families in the southern region who have lost much of their land to illegal settlements and later settlement expansion under the auspice of "closed military zones". The Palestinians lived in ramshackle tents which in some cases have been repeatedly demolished. Prior to that, prior to the land annexation, they lived in actual homes, as well as in caves made into liveable homes.

Buying wine grown on illegal Israeli settlements supports the annexation of Palestinian land and the displacement of some of the most impoverished people in Palestine.
