Atonement
Director Joe Wright has spun Ian McEwan’s best-selling novel of the same name into a beautiful screenplay of romantic longing and wartime adventure. As the beginning of World War II draws near, two English youths see past the differences of class that divide them, only to be separated by an accusation that has grave consequences.
Enchanted
Princess Giselle (Charlie Wilson’s War’s Amy Adams) lives in the wonderfully song-filled fantasy world of Andalasia. But when her wicked stepmother grows weary of the threat she poses to the stepmother’s place on the throne, Giselle is thrown down a magical well that lands her in the middle of Times Square. A Cinderella-esque story follows in which the princess learns of the hardships and wonders of the real world.
I Am Legend
Another movie about a lone survivor living in a postapocalyptic world where sadistic monsters rule the streets. But this one stars Will Smith—giving one of his best performances to date—and spent a fortune emptying out Manhattan for breathtakingly eerie landscape shots. I Am Legend is a fantastic addition to the genre.
Mafioso
A great dark comedy from the early 1960s that has finally been released on DVD. An Italian factory manager takes his wife and two daughters on a journey to rediscover his roots. Digging into the past can unearth awkward matters, however, as this family discovers. Of historical significance, Mafioso was the first Italian film to dramatize the modern mafia.
