Frisky Dingo: Season 1
An animated superhero spoof filled with witty dark humour and enjoyably ridiculous dialogue. Killface is a supervillain hell-bent on eradicating mankind. The only thing that stands in his way is Awesome X, a Bruce Wayne–styled billionaire who moonlights as the world’s greatest superhero.
Jimmy Carter Man from Plains
It’s been said that Jimmy Carter will be remembered as a more successful former U.S. president than president. This documentary by director Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia) focuses on the months that followed the release of Carter’s 2006 book Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, shedding light on a controversial period of the aging man’s life.
The Kite Runner
Based on the acclaimed book of the same name by Afghan author Khaled Hosseini, this drama tells the story of an Afghan American who returns to the country he fled as a child. Once there, he must confront the monsters he has been forced to live with his whole life, both within himself and out in the real world. While the film fails to capture the emotional intensity of the novel, it does a wonderful job of portraying the beauty of Afghanistan in the 1970s.
The Mist
Director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) tackles another Stephen King story with this horror flick about an unexplained fog that envelopes a small town in mystery. As a group of people trapped in a grocery store argue over what to do, what awaits them in the mist reveals itself.
PU-239
A man working at a Russian nuclear facility is exposed to a lethal dose of radiation. As the authorities work to cover up the accident, the man is pushed to desperate lengths to ensure that his family will survive without him. Despite its unfortunate title—which refers to an isotope found in weapons-grade plutonium—this is an engaging thriller with memorable characters.
