School board chair Kathy Corrigan eyes provincial office

Burnaby school board chair Kathy Corrigan told the Straight she is "seriously thinking about" running for the provincial NDP in a Burnaby riding in 2009.

"I did have a lot of people asking me about it last time around [in 2005], and I didn’t run, but I am thinking seriously about it this year," Corrigan said by phone. "I haven’t made a decision yet."

Corrigan is married to Burnaby mayor Derek Corrigan. She was first elected as a school trustee in 1999 and won re-election in 2002 and 2005. She said she is currently doing research on municipal affairs for the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

"My work at CUPE has also made me concerned about privatization of public services, and whether or not the public is getting the best value and level of service for its money," Corrigan said. "Education is my greatest passion."
