If Parliament focuses on abortion again because of Bill C-484, what should that debate be about?

Cristina Alarcon
Anti-abortion Vancouver pharmacist

“The debate should not be relegated to a rights debate. We should be talking about other issues. Why women are having abortions, and what can be done. Most are not taking it lightly, and they’re suffering as a consequence [of having one]. The debate should be what do women really need?”

Ujjal Dosanjh
Vancouver South Liberal MP

“The debate is settled as far as I’m concerned.”¦There’s no question that the gap between rich and poor has increased, and we’re not making a dent in poverty generally.”¦I think that’s an issue that’s important in itself. [However] I have not looked at the repercussions of that issue vis-í -vis abortion.”

Stephanie Gray
Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform

“I think it makes sense to talk about who the unborn child is, and what it does. This should be a space to think about the effects abortion have on women and on society. Fundamentally, it’s wrong because it kills a human being.”¦It’s not good for society to kill one of its own.”

Joyce Arthur
Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada

“We don’t need a debate. If we’re forced into one again, we’ll just be repeating ourselves. If we have one, it needs to centre around Bill C-484 and whether a fetus as a legal person can seriously impact a woman’s rights and abortion rights”¦Women are still at large disadvantages in [Canadian] society.”
