New on DVD: Becker, Echo and Other Elephants, Extraordinary Rendition, The Good Night, Sweeney Todd

Becker: The First Season
A sitcom starring Ted Danson as Dr. John Becker that ran from 1998 to 2004. The show follows Becker as he is driven to the brink of sanity by friends, coworkers, patients, and seemingly everyone he interacts with while running a small private medical practice in the Bronx.

Echo and Other Elephants
A series of documentaries collected by the BBC, this two-disc set delivers a beautiful look at the life of one of the world’s most famous elephants. Shot in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, where Echo is a lifelong resident, Echo and Other Elephants follows her and her herd, as well as elephant expert Saba Douglas-Hamilton.

Extraordinary Rendition
The writing and directorial debut of Jim Threapleton, ex-husband of Kate Winslet. An Arab teacher working in London is discovered badly beaten at Heathrow Airport, and flashbacks reveal a horrific ordeal of interrogation and torture at the hands of a shadowy government’s security apparatus.

The Good Night
A dark comedy with an all-star cast including Danny DeVito, Gwyneth Paltrow, Penélope Cruz, and The Office’s Martin Freeman. Gary Sheller (Freeman), a former pop star, has resigned himself to scoring commercials for a living since falling out of the spotlight. Stuck in a world of unrealistic ambition, he finds inspiration in a fantasy world.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Johnny Depp plays a barber who is gravely wronged and gives in to the temptations of revenge. Tim Burton’s adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s hit Broadway musical is wonderfully dark, and marks another delightful collaboration between the director and long-time friend Depp.
