The Georgia Straight is looking for a Junior Programmer to join our dedicated yet friendly Web department.

This individual will work closely with other members of the team to build and maintain interactive web-based media and applications. Working under the direction of the Web Manager, this person will help the team conceptualize, design and implement web projects according to appropriate practices and guidelines.

Working within the Linux, Apache, PHP and MySQL environment, the Junior Programmer will ensure projects are approached with creativity and professionalism and completed within the established timelines. Experience with Drupal is an asset.

Key activities and duties:
• Work with others to create and maintain database-driven web applications using the appropriate programming/scripting language (i.e. PHP, JavaScript)
• Help design, construct and manage MySQL databases
• Support the Senior Programmer in managing the web servers and test environments (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP)
• Assist with integrating online applications with various client back-end systems

Knowledge & skill requirements:
• Knowledge of web-based content management systems - with experience using Drupal CMS being an advantage
• Working technical knowledge of the following: HTML, PHP, CSS, MySQL, XML, Apache, Subversion & JavaScript
• An understanding of cross-browser compatibilities
• Self-motivated, analytical, and very detail-oriented
• Desire to learn and advance as a programmer
• Some knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite applications
