Ballet B.C.s master bows out

By Jessica Werb

After 17 years with Ballet B.C.—seven as a dancer and 10 as ballet master—Sylvain Senez is leaving the company at the end of this season.

“I’m probably going to do some more teaching, but I’m also a dance photographer and I work with ballet schools and students, so I’m going to try and develop that a bit more and maybe do a few dance projects, if they come my way,” Senez, 46, told the Straight. “It will be a big change, but I’m excited. It will take a couple of years to find my identity, because not only have I been here for 17 years but I’ve been working professionally nonstop for a dance company since I was 17.…It’s important in my life to have a little bit of time to myself now, just put on the brakes a little bit.”

Ballet B.C. has yet to appoint Senez’s successor.
