Ames, Weir in contention after US Masters second round

By Mat Loup

Another two-under-par round of 70 from Stephen Ames kept him near the top of the leaderboard at the halfway stage of the US Masters in Augusta, Georgia.

Unlike yesterday, when the Calgarian skipped round the course bogey-free, he picked up six birdies but tarnished that fine work somewhat with four birdies. However, at four-under for the tournament, he is only four shots off the lead, held by South Africa's Trevor Immelman, who fired another excellent 68.

Just one shot behind ames is Mike Weir of Bright's Grove, Ontario, who went round in 68, form reminiscent of 2003 when he became the first Canadian to don the famous green jacket.

Tiger Woods has yet to bare his claws on the course; a 71 means he is seven off the pace.
