Choir Practice bags spot at Sasquatch Music Festival

By Adrian Mack

Nobody should be surprised to see the New Pornographers and Destroyer representing Vancouver at this year’s Sasquatch Music Festival, but how about the Choir Practice? Despite being a relatively frivolous and fluid side project for its 15 or so members, the (almost) a cappella supergroup is heading to the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington, to perform at the major three-day music festival. Band member Chris Kelly told the Straight that it was persistence on the part of its label, Mint Records, that landed the Choir Practice on a bill that also includes R.E.M. and the Flaming Lips.

“We thought it was our amazing prowess and buzz at South by Southwest,” said a deadpan Kelly, whose main gig is the guitarist-vocalist for the Gay Straights, “but [Mint Records co-owner] Beez [Kevin Beesley-Hammond] had been pestering one of the organizers from Sasquatch. He just kept texting her, every single time we were on in Austin.”

Kelly isn’t sure that the Sasquatch rep actually caught any of the Choir Practice’s six SXSW performances. Nevertheless, they still got the call. The festival runs from May 24 to 26.
