Red Cat claws into CBC Radio 3 top 10 list

By Adrian Mack

It didn’t make the final five, but Red Cat Records co-owner Dave Gowans is perfectly happy with the Main Street store’s performance in a CBC Radio 3 survey to determine the best independent record store in Canada. “I’m glad we made the top 10, and I’m stoked that people voted for us,” Gowans told the Straight.

The survey is being conducted as part of CBC Radio 3’s Searchlight series. In mid-March, listeners went on-line to nominate 47 of their favourite independent music outlets across the country. In addition to Red Cat, Zulu Records and Audiopile on Commercial Drive remained in the running when voters winnowed the list down to 20. When it was reduced to 10, Red Cat was the last Vancouver business standing. CBC Radio 3 DJ Grant Lawrence will reveal the winner on Friday (April 18), one day before Record Store Day, an international effort by the Alliance of Independent Media Stores to raise the profile of independent record outlets.

On Saturday, Red Cat will celebrate Record Store Day with in-store performances by locals Young and Sexy, the Awkward Stage, the Great Outdoors, and Swank. Festivities begin at 1 p.m.
