Jeff Wall wins Audain Prize in the Visual Arts

By Brian Lynch

Arguably no local visual artist—or local artist of any stripe, for that matter—has achieved more on the world stage than Jeff Wall. His large, luminous colour transparencies helped lay the groundwork for a celebrated movement of photo-based artists from Vancouver, and have been among the most influential works in contemporary art. So he’s an obvious choice for this year’s Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts, the $30,000 award to be presented at a ceremony at the Vancouver Art Gallery on May 22.

Along with Wall will be fast-rising younger artists Tim Lee and Kevin Schmidt, each of whom will receive $12,000 VIVA awards, handed out by the Jack and Doris Shadbolt Foundation to distinguished B.C artists in mid career.
