Get ready for a Cherry bomb as good Canadian kids lead the way

By Jeff Paterson
Here's your warning, because it's on the way. Whether it's on tonight's Hockey Night in Canada broadcast or at some point over the weekend, Don Cherry is bound to let loose.

Through the first 10 days of the Stanley Cup playoffs, North American players occupy nine of the top 10 spots in the NHL playoff point parade. 'Good Canadians kids' as Grapes would call them, Sidney Crosby, Jarome Iginla, and Ryan Clowe all lead the way with eight points apiece.

Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin is the only non-North American to crack the top 10, although Grapes may not be so quick to point out that Vaclav Prospal, Mikko Koivu, Patrik Elias, and Pavel Datsyuk are all in the top 20 with Jaromir Jagr, Alexander Ovechkin, Marian Hossa and Peter Forsberg all in the top 27--and just three points behind the leaders.

Further to that, if you listen to sports radio in this city, you're bound to hear the argument about the inability of European captains leading their teams to the Stanley Cup. And until it happens, it will remain open to debate.

Of the six teams with Euro captains in these playoffs, two are leading their opening round series (Montreal with the injured Saku Koivu and the Rangers with Jagr), two are trailing (Boston with Zdeno Chara and Minnesota with Marian Gaborik), Detroit (with Nik Lidstrom) is tied while Daniel Alfredsson and his Ottawa Senators have been eliminated. Read into that whatever you like.

But know, too, that a very Canadian captain of the Ducks, Chris Pronger, could be going down with his ship tonight along with American Jamie Langenbrunner, whose New Jersey Devils are in big trouble against the Rangers.
