A Tony birthday evening for Holland

By Colin Thomas
Antony Holland, who founded Langara College’s Studio 58 theatre program in 1965 and ran it until 1984, has convened an 88th-birthday bash for himself. “He’s calling it his living funeral,” actor Allan Morgan says with a laugh. “He just phoned Jan Hodgson and me up and told us we were going to organize it.”

Holland, who now runs the Gabriola Theatre Centre, has selected scenes for colleagues and former students to perform at the event, which will take place at the Arts Club’s Granville Island Stage on Sunday (April 27), at 7 p.m. Performers will include Annabel Kershaw, Andrew Wheeler, Kerry Sandomirsky, Wendy Noel, Scott Bellis, Lara Gilchrist, and Julia Mackey.

Holland himself will perform with Warren Kimmel in a scene from Tuesdays With Morrie, a piece that won him a Jessie in 2007 and is returning to the Granville Island Stage from May 1 to 31.
