Pat’s Pub is about to sound a lot better

By Adrian Mack
Pat’s Pub has played host to some of the more interesting and outré musical acts that have passed through Vancouver recently. Now, after two years of featuring bands like indie heroes Oneida, the avant-prog of Japan’s Ruins, and the soccer-mom guitar virtuoso Marnie Stern, the Downtown Eastside venue has finally replaced its antique PA system. Pat’s Pub booker Steve Chase told the Straight that the upgrade couldn’t come soon enough. “People have been grumbling about it, and it’s finally happened,” he said, adding with a chuckle, “And we have enough mikes now.”

Veteran Vancouver stage tech and sound guy Destry Galgoczy in stalled the system, and Chase promises more changes to come. Plans are to introduce closed-circuit video, and the club also hopes to raise the stage by a few inches, permits allowing. “We’ve had some pretty crazy shows there where people have gotten pushed forward,” Chase said, “and that stage is total shin-breaker height.” Praising the pub’s owners for their commitment to live music, Chase continued, “It’s great to see a venue with such killer potential being finally realized.”
