Olympic secrecy should alarm taxpayers

Re: “Olympic records go missing”, April 17-24

Every taxpayer in B.C. and Canada should be very alarmed at this development. If, as the politicians promised, the Vancouver games will be no financial burden, then why the need for secrecy?

As an Ontario resident, I am happy that Toronto did not get the 2008 Summer Olympics, but I take little comfort in knowing it will be taxpayers of Vancouver and B.C. who will be forced to shoulder the debt of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Didn’t we all learn from the financial disaster that was the Montreal Olympics in 1976 that the games are just a giant boondoggle for a handful of politicians and sports bureaucrats?

Every person in Canada who thinks the Olympics are wonderful should be forced to read The Lords of the Rings and The Great Olympic Swindle by Andrew Jennings.
