Intelligence: Season 1
From Chris Haddock, the creator of Da Vinci’s Inquest, comes a gritty crime drama set on Vancouver’s “mean streets” that’s all about organized crime and the cops who fight to keep it at bay. Jimmy Reardon (Ian Tracey) is both an accomplished businessman and a drug smuggler, while Mary Spalding (Klea Scott) is the head of Vancouver’s Organized Crime Unit. Unchecked ambition causes them to form an unlikely alliance. Despite critical acclaim and three Gemini Awards, Intelligence was axed by CBC in March.
One of Many
Sally Tisiga, a member of the Kaska Nation, set out to understand her people and their struggle with Canadian integration policies. The exhaustively researched account, shot over 10 years by French filmmakers Jo Béranger and Doris Buttignol, is likely the most complete story of Native Canadians’ experiences in the residential-school system. The DVD is being launched in Vancouver on Thursday (May 1) with a 7:30 p.m. screening at the Pacific Cinémathèque.
Bella
An unpredictable love story set in New York City, in which a soccer player who’s about to make it big sees his career come crashing down. Meanwhile, a struggling waitress has her life turned upside down by an unwelcome discovery. A chance encounter between the two leads to love. Bella won the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival’s People’s Choice award.
Crossing Jordan: Season 1
Considered a long-overdue release by the series’ fans, the first season of Crossing Jordan is now on DVD. The show follows Dr. Jordan Cavanaugh (Jill Hennessy) and a slightly eccentric team of coroners as they tackle homicide investigations in Boston. From the creator of Heroes, Crossing Jordan is a fast-paced, character-driven drama full of mystery and laughs.
