Mother's Day gift idea: Buy a local produce growing share

By Craig Takeuchi

Can't think of what to give your mom for Mother's Day?

Interested in eating locally?

Or both?

Tamara Robinson of our accounting department pointed out that City Farm Boy, which grows vegetables in private Vancouver gardens and sells them at farmers markets, is looking for 15 shareholders for the 2008 crop.

(The Straight's foodie extraordinaire Angela Murrills also wrote about City Farm Boy in Straight Goods.)

The crop will include beans, beats, squash, potatoes, lettuce, cauliflower, basil, dill, radish, and more. No pesticides are applied.

Each shareholder will receive biweekly bins of seasonal vegetables (the Web site says ten bins but the PDF form says eight bins, so you might want to check about that when registering).

A regular garden share (which includes biweekly bins) is $225.

If you sign up for a working share, you agree to work 10 hours in exchange for a discount.

You can also negotiate a payment arrangement.

The price might be more than you would like to pay for a Mother's Day gift, but you could always split it if you have a bunch of siblings, or consider it for a birthday present, or something to share amongst a number of families or friends.

Visit the Web site for more details and the registration form.

If you are interested in supporting and eating local produce, this is a good way to get involved.
