New on DVD: Cinema16, The Flock, Still Life, National Treasure 2, Summer Rain

Cinema16: European Short Films
Includes previously unreleased material, cult classics, early works of some of today’s most celebrated filmmakers, and a number of award- winning shorts. Notable directors include Lars Von Trier of Dogme 95 fame, Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins), and Martin McDonagh (In Bruges).

The Flock
Richard Gere plays a jaded detective who walks a fine line between cop and criminal. Claire Danes is his partner, who is forced into a seedy S&M underworld to find a missing girl. The film, directed by Wai-Keung Lau (Infernal Affairs), also features Canadian pop-rock icon Avril Lavigne in a small role.

Still Life
In recent years, China’s construction boom has taken on near-mythical proportions. Still Life (original title Sanxia Haoren) looks at one mega-project, the Three Gorges Dam, and the millions of people it displaced. Winner of the Venice Film Festival’s 2006 grand prize, this fact-infused work of fiction was directed by Jia Zhang-Ke.

National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets
The follow-up to 2004’s Da Vinci Code–Indiana Jones mash-up, Book of Secrets is another fast-paced ride through a fictional American history. Nicholas Cage plays Ben Gates, a treasure hunter whose family’s reputation is put at risk by a rival. Gates’s solution? Kidnap the president of the United States. DVD extras include deleted scenes and making-of features, plus stunt reels.

Summer Rain
Antonio Banderas directed this coming-of-age tale that was an official selection at 2007’s Sundance Film Festival. Set in Spain in the 1970s, Summer Rain is a fun, sexy film that follows a group of young men in their pursuit of life’s joys. But life can’t be fun and games forever.
