Fire sparks Sandy Scofield benefit

A benefit will be held at the Railway Club tonight (June 5) for award-winning composer-musician Sandy Scofield. The quadruple Canadian Aboriginal Music Award winner and two-time Juno nominee lost a number of personal and professional items—including a hard drive containing many of her music files—when her West Side apartment was consumed by fire on January 30. Scofield wasn’t insured.

“A bunch of people volunteered to perform,” multi-instrumentalist Brian Minato told the Straight. “There’s so many bands on the bill now that myself, Steven Nikleva, and Randall Stoll are gonna be the backing band for whoever needs guitar, bass, and drums.”

Among the impressive 23 artists already confirmed for the show are Kinnie Starr, Coco Love Alcorn, Elizabeth Fischer, Janet Panic, and Curtis Clearsky. The fire started thanks to a late night of work and an errant candle, Minato explained. He added that Scofield, who is deaf in one ear, was sleeping and didn’t hear the fire alarm. A neighbour with a key let himself in to rouse the artist.
