Vancouver falls short of 2010 cycling goal

The City of Vancouver is falling far short of achieving a target of a 10-percent modal split of cyclists by 2010.

According to an appendix attached to the annual report of Vancouver's Bicycling Advisory Committee, in 2005 Vancouver city council supported the principle of having 10 percent of all trips by bicycle by 2010.

Currenly, only three to four percent of trips in the city are taken by bicycle, according to the appendix in the annual  report, which is far lower than many European cities.

The BAC annual report goes to city council's transportation and traffic committee on Tuesday morning (June 10). The report also noted that the Vancouver school board will likely establish its own bicycle-advisory committee this year.

In the report, the BAC also linked   the issue of bike theft to the quality and availability of bike parking.

Anyone who wishes to speak to council's transportation and traffic committee on Tuesday about any issues contained in  the report  may contact the meeting coordinator, Diane Clairmont, at diane.clairmont@vancouver.ca.

Most likely most of the readers have not seen the report, let alone have issues relating to it.

It would be good if the Straight can include a link to the report - if that's available to the public. EurActiv.com does so, and I think its about time that's available more widely as a feature on other sites!...
