Astoria Hotel turfs out promoter M. Jordan
There’s been a shakeup at the Astoria Hotel. The Downtown Eastside venue has grown into a major destination for live-music lovers in the last eight months or so, thanks largely to the efforts of promoter M. Jordan of Come and See Entertainment. Jordan, however, now seems to be out of a job. The frustrated promoter told the Straight that she “heard the news through the grapevine” and was subsequently forced to cancel her upcoming shows.
The Astoria’s bar manager, Rudy Dasta, said: “We were approached by another promoter and have decided to have DJs on Saturday nights now. Hopefully, there will still be a band that night, too. Fridays will remain a band night.”
Stepping into the breach are promoter–DJ John Cougar, who will cover Fridays for the bar, and Dustin Bromley of Sex Attack!, who will handle Saturdays. Cougar confirms that live music will still be on the menu, along with DJs. “The scene’s changed quite a bit,” Cougar told the Straight, “and there are so many people that are into both live and club music; we’re trying to provide both on the same night.”
Among the events already booked is the CD–release party for locals Dead Ghosts, with guests the Parallels, on July 18. Cougar will spin between sets.
