Elections Canada shows you the money

We won’t know how much cash candidates in this federal election blew on their campaigns until after voting day. But you can look up details on-line of contenders’ expenses and donations from previous races.

Elections Canada’s financial-reporting database stores information dating back to 1993 from election, leadership, and nomination campaigns, as well as political parties and riding associations. While it’s not the easiest site to navigate, digging around is rewarded with plenty of interesting tidbits. For instance, in the Vancouver Quadra by-election in March, Liberal MP Joyce Murray’s campaign took in $14,699.98 from 68 contributors, while 36 people donated $15,780 to second-place Conservative candidate Deborah Meredith.
