A video preview of the Vancouver New Music Festival
Although the Vancouver New Music Festival's Solus-The Art of Solo Virtuosity is devoted to sonic invention, many artists coming to the Scotiabank Dance Centre tonight through Saturday (October 23 to 25) have to be seen to be believed. So we've trawled the Net to find clips that illustrate what you will see-and hear. (For a full schedule, visit www.newmusic.org/festival.htm.)
Jaap Blonk (9 p.m. on Saturday)
The Dutch Dadaist blows sound bubbles as part of Messa di Voce, a playful video installation by Golan Levin and Zachary Lieberman.
Lori Freedman (8 p.m. tonight)
Closer to home, former Vancouverite Lori Freedman is caught in a solo improvisation at Victoria's Open Space artist-run centre. Check out the video below for clarinet shape-shifting.
Kuniko Kato (9 p.m. on Friday)
A Japanese-language news broadcast profiles this young percussionist whose music transcends linguistic barriers and stylistic boundaries.
Frances-Marie Uitti (9 p.m. tonight)
Cello magician Frances-Marie Uitti doesn't have much of a YouTube presence, and we couldn't find an example of her radical double-bow technique. But the clip below, with video accompaniment by Yota Morimoto, gives some idea of her fractal imagination.
