RED Digital Cinema to produce digital SLRs

RED Digital Cinema—best known for ridiculously high-resolution video cameras—have announced their foray into the digital world of single-lens reflex cameras.

The RED Scarlet and Epic are the company’s first digital SLRs and are scheduled for release next year.

Of course, the cameras will come bearing the aforementioned high resolution; the level of insane clarity bestowed upon these cameras ranges from a huge 3K—which is equal to a resolution of 3072 x 1728—to a mind-boggling 28K, or a resolution of 28,000 x 9334. (Keep in mind that most high-definition Hollywood films are shot in 4K [4520 x 2304].)

RED’s SLRs will also double as camcorders and be compatible with both Nikon and Canon lenses, giving customers of both companies something to be pleased about.

If that isn’t enough, there will be a rig available where users can add the ability to shoot in 3-D by adding a second camera to the mix.

RED also offers many of its components separately, allowing consumers to customize their build in the same fashion as mixing various Lego pieces together.

However, with crazy specs come crazy prices. The prices for RED’s cameras range from $2,500 for the cheapest model (3K) to $55,000 for the 28K beast.
