Mumbai politician resigns after underplaying terrorist attacks

The Mumbai politician who called  recent terrorist attacks "small incidents" has resigned, according to the Times of India.

R.R. Patil, deputy chief minister of the state of Maharashtra, said he quit "as per my conscience". Last week in response to reporters' questions about the terrorist attacks, Patil said, "Such small incidents happen in big cities. They (terrorists) came to kill 5,000 people but we ensured minimal damage."

The chief minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh, also appears on the way out, the Times of India reported. He's now in hot water because he surveyed the Taj Mahal Hotel with prominent film director Ram Gopal Varma (who made Sarkar, starring Amitabh Bachchan).

"The issue was raised at the all-party meeting convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last night which was also attended by [Congress leader] Sonia Gandhi with some parties  with some parties criticising the CM for his 'casual' attitude," the Times of India reported.
