The Stills
Montreal’s Stills never quite managed to capitalize on the buzz generated by their 2003 debut, Logic Will Break Your Heart. With killer cuts like “Lola Stars and Stripes” and “Still in Love Song”, the album crested on a wave of skinny-tie nostalgia and seemed potent enough to catapult the band into the upper echelons of rock. Well, Canadian rock, at least. Five years later, the Stills continue to battle it out in the indie trenches. It wouldn’t be fair to categorize these guys as also-rans, though. They continue to make anthemic rock, although these days it’s a little less neo–new wave and a lot more The Unforgettable Fire lite. It’s the type of thing that aims at stadiums but hits soft-seaters instead. But if that means we get to see the Stills in the opulent confines of the Orpheum on Saturday (January 10)—when they open for Sam Roberts—we’re not complaining.
