Tight times put squeeze on Pride Parade

Summer 2009 may truly be a no-fun city for Vancouver.

Recently, the annual HSBC Celebration of Light fireworks competition was cancelled due to a lack of funds.

Another annual summer event which drew crowds may be in jeopardy. Xtra West reported today that the Vancouver Pride Society is having difficulties finding sponsors, both old and new, to help finance their annual Pride Parade.

The cancellation of the fireworks event in addition to the potential downsizing or even cancellation of the Pride Parade will also impact West End businesses, who benefited from the massive hordes of people who flocked to the area.

Tourism will also be affected as well, which will in turn also affect businesses such as  hotels and restaurants, at a time when the downturn in the economy has resulted in some business closures and bankruptcies.

On the upside, there will be less garbage and  traffic congestion.

It remains to be seen what other public summer events that rely on sponsorship will be similarly affected.

tubermier here. I'm very glad the pride parade is having such difficulty and may hopefully be cancelled this year. There is no honest reason why the gay community must parade itself through the city every year, half naked some of them flaunting it's sexual orientation. Most of the parade participants are nothing less than the worst kind of deviants, so proud to advertise their perverse sexual practice to the world and throwing it into GOD"S face, daring him to challenge their right to practice and advertise. We must not judge or condemm them, for GOD will be the judge of all in the end. What this city needs so much more is a family values parade, showing the world we are proud to be hetero and family oriented, leaving out the sexual side of husband and wife. that part does not need to be advertised. I would rather watch whole families march with the pride of living the more wholesome life.

tubermier (below): Look deep into your heart: are you so sure that only heterosexuals are deserving of love? Do you know how high the incidence of suicide attempts are among high school students, because of attitudes like yours? What will you do when one of your best friends, relatives, or co-workers comes out?

I love it when people make hateful comments and then claim that they are reserving judgment to God. Healthy families do march at the Pride Parade, many of them carrying stickers that read "hate is not a family value." Why are we so happy to parade through the streets once a year? Because once a year we outnumber the hateful people like you who wish that we would stay scared and shamed and closeted our whole lives. So, inadvertently, your hate has helped fuel this event that you claim is so immoral. See how that works?

Ha ha! Tubermier, you are such a tube! I hope I go to hell, cause that's where all the party people will be at. Have fun in your heaven!
