Summer 2009 may truly be a no-fun city for Vancouver.
Recently, the annual HSBC Celebration of Light fireworks competition was cancelled due to a lack of funds.
Another annual summer event which drew crowds may be in jeopardy. Xtra West reported today that the Vancouver Pride Society is having difficulties finding sponsors, both old and new, to help finance their annual Pride Parade.
The cancellation of the fireworks event in addition to the potential downsizing or even cancellation of the Pride Parade will also impact West End businesses, who benefited from the massive hordes of people who flocked to the area.
Tourism will also be affected as well, which will in turn also affect businesses such as hotels and restaurants, at a time when the downturn in the economy has resulted in some business closures and bankruptcies.
On the upside, there will be less garbage and traffic congestion.
It remains to be seen what other public summer events that rely on sponsorship will be similarly affected.
