Legendary songwriter JJ Cale heading to North Vancouver

What do Lynyrd Skynyrd, Captain Beefheart, Freddie King, Sergio Mendes, and Bryan Ferry all have in common? Not that much, really, apart from the fact that they've all covered JJ Cale's "Same Old Blues".

Cale is better known as the writer of "Cocaine" and "After Midnight", two songs that helped make Eric Clapton a very wealthy man, but there's nothing like hearing the legend from Tulsa, Oklahoma croon those numbers in his own exquisitely laidback way, with his understated guitarwork laying out a downhome shuffle. Vancouverites will be able to do just that on April 10 when the 70-year-old tunesmith visits the Capilano Performing Arts Theatre, where he'll focus on material from the brand new Roll On, his first solo CD in five years.

Tickets for JJ Cale are $39/37 and go on sale tomorrow (Feb. 25) at 11 am at 604-990-7810 or www.capilanou.ca/theatre/.

Why does it always have to come back to Skynyrd? Wouldn't it be far cooler to mention that Spiritualized covered Cale's "Run"?

Er... I mean Spiritualized incorporated Cale's "They Call Me the Breeze" into their song called "Run". And yes, I know Lynyrd Skynyrd also covered that song... because it always comes back to Skynyrd.

Yes it does always come back to Skynyrd, my friend, yes it does. And rightfully so. But I'd appreciate if you didn't mention Spiritualized in the same breath as Skynyrd. It just ain't right.

Too true, too true. Because Spiritualized rules, right?

Oh sure, they might rule if Steve Gaines came down from on high and taught them all how to freakin' play guitar. These shoegazers wouldn't know what to do with a JJ Cale riff if it bit them on their Pitchfork-readin' hipster butts. Nuff said.
