Steven Page quits Barenaked Ladies

Barenaked Ladies singer Steven Page has quit the long-running Toronto band, according to a statement posted on the BNL Web site Tuesday night.

"By mutual agreement, Steven Page will be parting company with the remaining members of Barenaked Ladies," the announcement reads. "Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn, Ed Robertson, and Tyler Stewart will continue recording and touring together as Barenaked Ladies. Steven Page will pursue solo projects including theatrical opportunities while the band enters the studio in April 2009, and hits the road in the fall."

Page was arrested for cocaine possession last July and sentenced to six months probation. It was also a tumultuous summer for Robertson, who survived a plane crash in August.

In a December 3 post on his blog, Page noted that he was "doing great", having lost 40 pounds. "Yes, it’s been a terrible year for the band, and for me personally, but there have also been many things to be happy and grateful for: Falling in love, a renewed sense of peace, the best health of my adult life, some amazing creative and artistic opportunities, and the chance for a renewed and fruitful relationship with my band, friends and loved ones."

Page has already released one solo album (in collaboration with British singer-songwriter Stephen Duffy), under the name the Vanity Project, in 2005. Here's the video for the Vanity Project's "Wilted Rose":

Come on. You know you loved "If I Had $1,000,000" when it came out, just like everyone else in the country did.
