Your horoscope for February 26 to March 4, 2009

Since the beginning of history, astrological calendars have recorded wisdom and conveyed mythical stories to the next generation. No society has survived in isolation or without an advanced time system. Calendars are extremely old, and they hold our secrets. Everyone seems to think, however, that the ancient Mayans, a naive and simple people, couldn’t have invented a calendar. Their calendar is too complex, too mystical, and professes a knowledge that is, well, beyond human understanding. Aliens must have given it to them. Yep, that’s it. Aliens.

Okay, fair enough, but I have questions. If the Mayans were so simple and backward, how did they manage to create a culture that dominated a massive continent for hundreds of years? How does an ignorant and primitive people build monuments that perfectly echo the cosmos and even today are unthinkably complex?

Never mind that many ancient cultures have done precisely that. The Egyptians chronicled life after death. The Chinese built gigantic pyramids. Hindu scholars charted the Milky Way. And a stone calendar predating the Mayans by thousands of years was recently discovered in Canada.

What we’re missing here is an appreciation of ancient knowledge. Is it so crazy to think that some intrepid traveller many centuries ago wandered into a tiny Central American village and shared their knowledge? Perhaps the aliens that brought mystical cosmic knowledge to the Mayans actually arrived in wooden sailing ships or birchbark canoes...

Lasha, in this column intro, you mention ancient cultures and knowledge. I just finished reading an amazing book about such (lost) knowledge: "Initiation" by Elizabeth Haich. As I read recently: "as proud children of science and reason, we made ourselves the orphans of wisdom" (D. Chopra). How true that is!
