Jag Jeondeyan de Mele loses its way from Punjab to Vancouver

By R. Paul Dhillon,

Starring Harbhajan Mann, Tulip Joshi, Gurpreet Ghuggi, and Puneet Issar. Directed by Baljit Singh Deo. In Punjabi with English subtitles. Rated G.

Punjabi movies, with their often unconventional storytelling, are even more loosey-goosey than song-and-dance-happy Bollywood films. Jag Jeondeyan De Mele , a locally produced Punjabi movie, is no exception with this mishmash of a story that stretches from the villages of Punjab to Vancouver.

Watch the trailer for Jag Jeondeyan De Mele.

This tragic tale of doomed lovers—Abahijot Singh (B.C.–raised Harbhajan Mann), the son of a wealthy landowner, and Mittro (Tulip Joshi), a “low caste” tribal girl—is reminiscent of any number of similarly themed Bollywood films, particularly the memorable Lamhe ( Moments ) from romance guru Yash Raj Chopra.

Despite the heavy theme, this is no dissertation on the evils of India’s caste system, and lacks any meaningful commentary.

The first half shows promise, largely due to the charming and subtle performance of Joshi, a Gujarati-Armenian Bollywood star making her Punjabi film debut. Joshi’s Mittro makes you melt every time she’s on-screen, despite some big holes in the plot and a one-note performance from Mann.

Veteran actor Puneet Issar also elevates the film as the Singh family patriarch, who must protect the family honour by barring his son from marrying outside their caste.

But the second half of the film, largely set in Canada, is a complete letdown, as the filmmakers lose track of the story and become preoccupied with product placement.

Music-video director Baljit Singh Deo has a handle on the visuals but a loose grip on the story, which he loses completely in the second half with too many unnecessary characters and plots.

Despite the many flaws of Jag Jeondeyan De Mele , lovers of Punjabi films will find it satisfying, given the good production values. All they’ll need is a high tolerance for overwrought melodrama (which I, unfortunately, don’t have).

Oh please, Mr Dhillon, how could this movie be any more melodramatic or full of unnecessary characters than your very own cliché-filled "Sweet Amerika"? (which may I remind you got slain by your fellow Straight reviewer AND your very own cameraman...who even apologizes to those who wasted time and money seeing your film...ouch!)

I guess beautiful love stories aren't something that Mr Dhillon can appreciate...but most of the Punjabis I know who have seen Jag Jeondeyan de Mele, including myself definitely can, and have. At least Mr Dhillon's acknowledged the good production values within the film which can't be missed to even the blindest eye. Stunning visuals paired together with some of the most beautiful and melodic music I've heard in a Punjabi movie make this one stand out a mile from the other movies I've seen that have been created for the Punjabi audience thus far.

Fortunately I didn't let this biased review keep me from experiencing the movie, which was more than satisfactory for me, my family and friends. Plus, how could I even have found any credibility in the words of a reviewer/director who's recent film was a complete flop itself? (sorry Mr Dhillon, don't mean to keep rubbing salt in yer wounds...)

Hello Mr. Dhillon . I have read your review quiet carefully. But I am realy sad to know that for you this movie is nothing. If i am not wrong this movie is little bit based on punjabi novel "dil dariya sumundraon dunge" and like a classic novel this is also a classic.with every passing scene you find totaly coloured in the movie colour and ofcourse stuunig visiuals and awesome music. This movie is a landmark in punjabi movie industuty. Thakns to the person involved in the making of this movie. they donot need brave reviews to continue.

It's a horrible film. Instead of film it should had been called a theatre drama instead due to it's slow pace and execution by actors. In between movie i felt like going out but, had to sit and ended up having Saridon after the movie.

I recently saw the movie as i decided not to be swayed by the mixed reviews it got in its opening months. First off i would disagree that Punjabi movies aren't high on artistic value. In fact some of the punjabi movie themes are far more strong and compelling than most bollywood productions. I give Harbhajan Mann and Manmohan Singh all credit of reviving Punjabi cinema and taking it a step futher than the run of the mill scripts of "Jat da Badla" that our punjabi directors had started bringing out in the 90s.

But i do have to agree that the power of the script was somewhat lost in the movie. Not the best of what we have seen from Harbhajan Mann in the past. Gulzar showed alot of promise but didnt have enough screen presence to leave a lasting impression. I am sure we will see more of him in future productions. A promising new face and real life personality. People can identify with him.

Tulip's role came out as more glamourous than substance. For some reason i could not see the true Mittro in her. Overall i would give it a 6.5 on 10. Music is really good specially the Rahat fateh Ali track.

If i give 9/10 to "Asaanu Maan Watna Da" then i would give 5/10 to this movie. I agree there is a lot of melodrama and they could have done a much much better job.
But the fact is that there is only 1 high budget punjabi movie every year and even though it is an average or below average movie, I would still watch and enjoy.
According to me they did a below average job but I still enjoyed it.
Suggestion to the production house: Watch "Asaanu Maan Watna Da" twice again and see what class it has in terms of the messages it gives and the kind of story it had. Take lessons and make a movie with similar or high standards. This time your standard was very low....All the best for future.

Aman
what's up with the punjabi characters trying to do an american accent? it was really funny at times.. and to harbajan mann.. it's not cAffee... it's cOffee// common sense poeple...

I totally agree with Aman. Bullshit movie. It was nothing like i expected it to be. You Harbhajan has improved over the time. In every new movie he gives a much better performance than the previous one...but this one worse. Thats 3 hours of my life that i will never get back.

I thought that movie had a nice idea but, Harbhajan can't act! Jimmy Shergill did way better in Tera Mera Ki Rishta and Munde UK De.

i completely agree with you, this movie has got some impressive visual appearance, but that does not mean that the movie is up to the mark. It definitely is a melodrama.
Direction 6\10
Acting 4\10
Story 3\10
Overall i would rate it 5\10.......
Definitely not worth watching in a theatre. These films are making money only because there are no other descent punjabi movies which can compete.

This movie is a disgusting racist film - the portrayal of the black woman who married ghuggi is so offensive, and I cannot believe that the reviewer and all of those who commented above either ignored or accepted this fact. I guess it goes to show how racist our jat sikh punjabi culture is - lets see a film that ridicules sikhs in the way this film ridicules black women and see how much you all would enjoy that film. Bloody racist sikhs!

I totally agree with that very last comment. Sikhs manily JATTs are the most backward people who still are proud of their caste. The sikh culture alleviates such caste systems but these stupid people continue to show us unintelligent they are. Sikhs who complain Aussies or westerners as racist are stuffed in the head, because they are just as racist as those they consider racist. jatts need a hard look at themselves. Revolting!
