Protesters blockade Surrey home to be demolished for South Fraser Perimeter Road

Anti-Gateway crusader Carmen Mills has promised the blockade at a residence in Surrey’s Bridgeview neighbourhood will be maintained 24-7.

“[Surrey resident] Tom Jaugelis is talking about camping out,” Mills, founder of Web site Gatewaysucks.org, told the Straight by cellphone.

The blockade was set up this morning (March 2) at around 6 a.m. in front of the last remaining Bridgeview home facing expropriation to make way for the South Fraser Perimeter Road. The road is one component of B.C. transportation minister Kevin Falcon’s contentious Gateway Program.

Mills said there have been people “coming and going” for the last 12 hours and around 10 people at any one time are in front of the residence, located at 124 Street at 114 Avenue in north Surrey.

The homeowner, Will Schober, is not taking part in the protests.

According to an article posted by Mills on Gatewaysucks.org, Schober’s residence is slated for demolition today to make way for “pre-load” sand.

“Bridgeview was hit first and hardest by preparation for the SFPR freeway, which feeds a longstanding desire on the part of government and developers to completely industrialize this multicultural working family neighbourhood,” the post states.

“A group of resisters from Surrey, Delta and Vancouver are NOW outside the house preparing to stand in front of the bulldozers 24/7, in support of this community and in solidarity with the Day of Civil Disobedience Against Climate Change throughout North America.”

Mills adds in her post: “And with PM2 [Port Mann] financing just collapsed, there has never been a better moment to grind Falcon’s face in the sand.”
