Heaven on Earth
Indo-Canadian writer-director Deepa Mehta (Water) explores the topics of domestic violence and familial duty in this film about Chand (Bollywood’s Preity Zinta), who travels from India to Canada for an arranged marriage to Rocky (Vansh Bhardwaj), a sweet-faced man with a hidden temper.
Let the Right One In
Oskar, a friendless 12-year-old, is excited when a new girl named Eli moves in to his Stockholm neighbourhood. However, when a spate of disappearances occurs, Oskar discovers that his new best friend is a vampire.
Milk
This biopic chronicles the later years in the life of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office in California. Directed by Gus Van Sant, Milk received two 2009 Academy Awards: best actor in a leading role (Sean Penn) and best original screenplay (Dustin Lance Black).
Synecdoche, New York
Writer Charlie Kaufman gets behind the lens for his directorial debut with Synecdoche, New York, the story of a regional theatre director (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who creates the ultimate immersive play where art doesn’t just imitate life—it is life.
The Original Promise
In this documentary, released on March 1, hosts Doug Kooy and Farrah Aviva attempt to explore the multicultural, innovative Israel often ignored by the media. Interviews with Israeli musicians, comedians, and entrepreneurs are contrasted with on-the-street interviews with Vancouverites about their perceptions of the controversial nation.
