Jelena Milojevic gives the accordion respectability

    1 of 1 2 of 1

It’s an instrument more associated with aging polka bands than the classical-music realm, but Croatia-born Jelena Milojevic is generating plenty of newfound respect for the accordion. A recent immigrant to Vancouver, Milojevic is taking part in the B.C. Days of Serbian Culture with a concert this Saturday (March 14) at Christ Church Cathedral, with guest artist clarinetist Milan Milosevic. The program of works by composers including Franz Grothe, Franck Angelis, and Anatoli Kusiakov promises to shatter assumptions about what the squeezebox is all about.

Jelena's really cool, I'm totally excited about this concert. Not many people in North America play the concert-style Chromatic Button Accordion – no piano-keys, lots and lots of little buttons, with a range greater than a grand piano keyboard.

She's certainly one of the top players in Canada at least. It's a privilege to get to see her. We had her on our radio programme last year and it was really fun.
