How much do Vancouverites tip?

The bill’s on the table. How much do you tip?

We asked our readers as part of our Golden Plate survey, and here’s what they told us.

Just over a third of readers tip 15 percent. Almost another third were flexible with their gratuities, saying how much they tip depends on the service. And 20 percent of readers tip, well, 20 percent.

The remaining responses were scattered, with 13 percent saying they tip between 15 and 20 percent.

Are readers tipping on the amount before taxes are added, or on the total bill, which includes taxes? Sixty-two percent of respondents said that they tip on the pre-tax amount. The rest tip post-tax. But as one reader put it, “why tip the government”?

If all these numbers have your eyes glazing over, you’re not the only one. One reader says of his or her tips: “average is 15 percent, pre-tax-ish”¦I mean seriously, this is math after a couple drinks!”

I think there is a massive disconnect between servers expectations and what customers believe is true about pre and post tax tipping. Many servers friends I know complain about the stingy 10% tips which seem all too common, but when pressed they think that the tip should be based on the total. Most customers, which is backed up by the pie chart on this page, think otherwise. A 10% tip on the total could easily be 15% on the subtotal. Here in lies the problem.
