Zoe Royer may join race to replace NDP MP Dawn Black in New Westminster-Coquitlam

A third candidate may seek the federal NDP nomination for New Westminster-Coquitlam in the by-election expected to follow the impending resignation of MP Dawn Black.

Coquitlam councillor Fin Donnelly told the Straight that he’s heard that Zoe Royer may be interested in contesting the nomination.

A health administrator, Royer ran in last year’s federal election as the NDP’s candidate for Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam against stalwart Conservative MP James Moore.

Black was acclaimed over the weekend as the provincial NDP candidate for New Westminster in the May provincial election

Currently the federal NDP’s defence critic, Black is expected to resign soon.

Councillors Lorrie Williams of New Westminster and Barry Lynch of Coquitlam have said that they are considering running for the NDP nomination.

Williams told the Straight that she’s seriously contemplating about another stab at federal politics.

She ran in 2000 as the NDP candidate in the former New Westminster-Coquitlam-Burnaby riding, and came behind then incumbent Conservative MP Paul Forseth and Liberal candidate Lee Rankin.

A retired teacher and active advocate of education in Africa, Williams is on her third term as a councillor for New Westminster.

Williams expects a by-election in the fall.

Lynch is on his third term as a Coquitlam councillor.
