Vancouver Opera's 2009-2010 season poster designs have been selected by Communication Arts magazine for its renowned July Illustration Annual, regarded as one of the most exclusive illustration competitions in the world.

The VO posters were designed by Cuban-born New Jersey-based Edel Rodriguez, and mark a break from the more figurative illustrations that the opera company has used in the past.

Depicting the operas Norma, Nixon in China, The Marriage of Figaro, and Madama Butterfly, Rodriguez's illustrations are highly stylized, graphic images with a limited colour palette that hark back to the art-deco  aesthetic of 1920s movie posters.
