The Downtown Eastside Centre for the Arts is hosting its first open house today (April 23) at the Interurban Gallery located at 1 East Hastings from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The event will introduce the new centre and its pilot programs to the Downtown Eastside community.

The centre was created by vocalist Dalannah Bowen, who financed its creation through concerts. The goal is to provide art supplies for artists and community residents of all ages, and involve them in theatre, music, dance, visual arts, and other forms of creative expression.

Upcoming programs scheduled by the centre include a course in fabric arts which culminating in an exhibition and sale at the Interurban Gallery; a Move IT movement program for seniors designed by Joe Ink and the Move It Dance Company; a drop-in arts program held in the early evening; a music and song program for local residents that will include vocal coaching and a choir; and an exploration of traditional indigenous music and the blues.
