Six food & dining events

Mamma Mia
Go French this Mother’s Day (May 10) with the $26 prix fixe ($15 for kids) at Bistrot Bistro (1961 West 4th Avenue). Doors open at noon with í  la carte egg-centric brunch additions, and the regular menu as well. Meanwhile, the Hamilton Street Grill (1009 Hamilton Street) goes brunch-crazy with $12 Bennies, burgers, and more.

Haute Baby Cuisine
Some will call the new set menu for babies at the Sutton Place Hotel (845 Burrard Street) a gimmick, while others will see it as a godsend. Starting Mother’s Day (May 10), Fleuri Restaurant patrons can order their infant a trio of edibles for $12: pea, spinach, and broccoli soup; carrot and butternut squash purée; and rice porridge. It’s all organic, and is available at lunch and dinner every day.

Soup Mixer
Global food security will be simmering at the Stone Soup Festival this Saturday (May 9) from noon to 5 p.m. The annual festival, held at the Britannia Community Centre (1661 Napier Street), brings people together over free soup to highlight culture, sharing resources, and eating locally. There will be a small farmers market, crafts, food films, book launches, and more; call 604-718-5800 for information.

Prawn Mania
The Chefs’ Table Society Third Annual Spot Prawn Festival ties up at the False Creek Fisherman’s Wharf (1505 West 1st Avenue) on Saturday (May 9) from 12 to 3 p.m. Buy just-caught prawns (they’ll be sold daily from 1 p.m. over the next eight weeks), taste local chefs’ delish dishes, and catch cooking demos at Granville Island Public Market on May 9, 10, and 16.

Turkish Grind
Along with standard organic coffees and teas, the new Café Vancouver in Yaletown (883 Hamilton Street) offers dark, strong Turkish coffee. Rich Turkish pastries are also on the menu, along with a Turkish breakfast, soups, panini, and more. Get a pick-me-up from 6 a.m. daily.

Sweet Sixty
is the magic number for Max’s Delicatessen & Bakery (3105 Oak Street), which is celebrating 60 years in business on Oak. Every day in May, the shop is offering a different sandwich at 60 percent off, and all six-inch cakes are $19.49. (The price comes from the year the shop opened.) Enter a draw for a shot at the free lunches they’re giving away daily for the rest of the year, or come in on May 23 and 24 for 60-cent coffees, cookies, and more.

Hats Off
Hazelmere Organic Farms’ Gary King, a much-loved Surrey organic farmer and environmentalist, passed away last week. A thoughtful and generous man, King supplied vegetables to many Vancouver restaurants and collaborated with restaurateur John Bishop, a long-time friend, on Fresh, an ingredient-focused, award-winning cookbook.
