Randy Bachman becomes an officer of the Order of Canada

Legendary Canadian rocker Randy Bachman was invested as an officer of the Order of Canada on May 15. The Salt Spring Island resident, who helped found the Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive and wrote enduring hits including “Takin’ Care of Business” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet”, received the medal from Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. “It was humbling and an honour to be recognized alongside the other great Canadians who have spent a lifetime excelling in medicine, the arts, sports, politics, and the humanities,” Bachman told the Straight.

Along with Bachman, former federal cabinet minister Allan MacEachen and Montreal film director John Smith were named to the order, as were baritone John Fanning and Quebec media personality Suzanne Lapointe. While Bachman was thrilled with the recognition, he plans to just keep on doing what he does best: “Write songs, record, play live gigs, keep doing my radio show,” he said. “And enjoy life to the fullest.”

In reporting on Randy Bachman's receiving of the Order of Canada, several other recipients were mentioned but I was surprised that you overlooked one closer to home. The Executive Director of Early Music Vancouver José Verstappen was also honoured in that ceremony for his work in promoting period performance practice (otherwise referred to as early music) locally nationally and internationally. Congrats to him and all the recipients.
