Wanted: Weapons of Fate is a third-person shooter on crack

(Warner Bros.; PC, PS3, Xbox 360; rated mature)

Unless you have been a hermit for the last decade or so, you’ve gotten your hands on a third-person shooter. Two of the best are obviously Gears of War 1 and 2.

In Wanted: Weapons of Fate, the third-person camera angle is perfect. (Some recent games—Resident Evil 5—have this done poorly.) You’re in the shoes of the film Wanted’s main character (snarky comments included). Ninety percent of Wanted is played behind cover. The moving from cover to cover play is dynamic and very fluid (think Gears on crack). Every time you kill two baddies in a row, you get a special power that lets you slow down time and shoot whilst flipping over cover or standing still (reminding me of that Chow Yun-Fat game, but on crack).

The aiming in Wanted is a little touchy, so it often took me a full clip just to lay down enemies. My issues with the aiming became a big problem because ammo is somewhat scarce. Often you’re only carrying one extra clip at a time, and only when you bring an enemy down do you get refills.

Some levels in Wanted can begin to be repetitive, with you killing the same enemy over and over again. Luckily, the issue Wanted has with its repetition is remedied by the different feel of this shooter. On top of all the gorgeous stylistic shooting acrobatics, is your melee attack. Your player’s melee attack is with a knife, and comes with great effects that include a rumble in your pad and blood splatter on the screen.

The result of the spectacular graphics, fantastic feel, inspiring soundtrack and audio, and riveting story is a superb video game.
