Swine flu shuts down Burnaby’s Marlborough Elementary School for one week
The Burnaby School District has shut down Marlborough Elementary School for one week, after the Fraser Health Authority confirmed today (June 16) a fifth case of swine flu at the school.
The school, near Metrotown, will be closed from tomorrow (June 17) to next Wednesday (June 24).
“On June 16, Dr. Larry Gustafson, Medical Health Officer at the Fraser Health Authority confirmed a fifth case of H1N1 at Marlborough Elementary School in Burnaby,” read an update posted today on the school district’s home page. “In this case however it has also been confirmed that the student attended school during the infectious period.”
According to the school district, the latest case meets the B.C. Ministry of Education’s criteria for determining whether to temporarily shut down a school.
The district called the closure a “precautionary measure”.
As of yesterday (June 15), the B.C. Centre for Disease Control had confirmed 172 cases of swine flu in the province, according to an information bulletin issued by the Ministry of Health Services and the Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport.
