Richard's on Richards to close next month

According to a news release from Richard's on Richards today, the long-running Vancouver night-life institution at 1036 Richards Streets will be gone by the end of next month.

The release reads "Aquilini Investments have given notice to Richard’s on Richards to vacate the premises on July 21, 2009. The building will be demolished late July." In its place, Aquilini will construct a new condominium development.

As for the club, its liquor license has been transferred to 556 Seymour Street (former home of A&B Sound), where a new club will open in mid October. The new establishment promises four lounges, a 5,000-square-foot dance floor, and two art galleries, and will feature dance nights on weekends, with live music relegated to Sunday through Thursday.

This is great news because Vancouver has way too many classic venues for live music and not nearly enough overpriced condo developments...

Think about it Aquilini: who's going to want to live in your condos if you're killing the city around them?

Well that explains a lot, I was there a few months ago to see Brett Dennen, what a dump it’s become...

And that guy “helping” in the bathroom really has to go........

I can't wait for the day a developer tries to take down the Commodore. I mean come on, do we need another tower in Yaletown? Why don't they put a tower on top of the A&B Sound. It's ugly, it needs to be torn down. Richards is a beautiful, historic brick building that doesn't do us any good as a pile of bricks. Aquilini needs to know that they're taking a little piece of Vancouver away from us.

Aren't there shows there in August? I have tickets to Bat For Lashes on Aug. 25.

I hope they don't move it to a dump like the Plaza!!

Long live Dick's!

Nope. Things are all over for Richards on Richards. I guess the land is too valuable to be used for club nights and indie bands. Plus, the city doesn't have much interest beyond any clubs that aren't on its "Entertainment District"

The Bat For Lashes show, and other shows that had been scheduled at Richards on Richards between now and October have been moved to other venues. Namely--The Venue, which was formerly the Plaza on Granville after its gone through some reconstruction. Though canny Vancouverites of a certain age will recall The Venue was what used to be called The Roxy just a few paces up the other side of Granville.

I'm currently drafting a story/article about the history of Richards on Richards. If anybody has any anecdotes they'd like to pass along of shows they saw there, played there, if you worked there, had bad night there or a great night, feel free to drop me a line via www.aaronchapman.net - I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Truly terrible news, not that I haven't been bracing myself for it. Richards (despite it's japanese-horror-film bathrooms and wobbly stools) was by far the best small music venue in the city. Yet another nail in the live music coffin for Vancouver.

Sigh.

"I hope they call it Richard's on Seymours."

How 'bout Richard on Seymour...or better: Dick's on Seymour.

I'm going to miss Vancouver's best live venue besides The Commodore. It was THE place to see rising Indie Rock acts like Franz Ferdinand, M83, Spoon, the list goes on.

Vancouver, the city with no history.

Sad day for Vancouver, saw some awesome bands over the past few years. The Cinematic Orchestra were fantastic, the sound was great and the intimacy unmatched anywhere else in Vancouver. Also saw Kid Koala at Richards, and a year later at the Commodore, Richards was 100 times better.Tthe Commodore despitebeing a great venue has owners who care more about selling booze than about the music, hence the 11pm+ headliners.
Also have tickets for Bonobo on the 20th of July, arghhh..moved to the venue, a truly horrible place to see a show, saw Coldcut there a few years ago, great band but terrible place with a giant bar in the middle of the dance floor. Hope i can get a refund as i wont be going to that crappy excuse for a Venue. Doubt i'll be going to many more concerts in Vancouver..Meh!!

I am sooooo very sad to see Richards on Richards go. Other than the Commodore, it's the only decent place to see live music downtown. There used to be lots of options and now we're down to 1!!!! (No offence, Vogue - you're a lovely space but lack the option of people dancing). God this city frustrates me sometimes. Why on EARTH would we need another condo development here. So so sad.
