Home for the Games to steer 2010 rental proceeds to homeless

A new nonprofit project hopes to make the 2010 Olympics an enjoyable occasion for everyone. Home for the Games will act as a housing broker between visitors to Vancouver and locals hoping to rent out their apartments for the Games.

So how does Home for the Games differ from Rent 2010, Van2010rentals.com, or other Web sites advertising rentals from Vancouverites hoping to capitalize on the Winter Games?

The project requires that homeowners agree to donate at least 50 percent of the money they make through their sublets to charities and groups dedicated to helping the city’s homeless.

Home for the Games will soon launch an on-line matchmaker to coordinate rentals between tourists and tenants. Teams of volunteers will also be visiting prospective housing to ensure that they’re up to standards before listing them on-line.

While still in its preliminary stages of development, the nonprofit has already raised $40,000 in donations.

We registered our second home in Vancouver last week, but we were not contacted so far, because we had to go to Vancouver over the weekend. Please contact us at bowsprit@dccnet.com to arrange volunteer to come to our apartment. I will be in Vancouver at Thursday evening. Thanks.
