COPE and Vision cooperate to address issues relating to sex trade

Vision Vancouver, COPE, and the Greens worked cooperatively to toss the NPA out of power in the 2008 Vancouver election.

Since Gregor Robertson's election as mayor, however, Vision has not exactly shared the spoils of power.

COPE councillor Ellen Woodsworth wasn't appointed to the Homeless Emergency Action Team. Nor was  COPE councillor and regional-issues chamption  David Cadman  named to the board of Metro Vancouver, which is embarking on several major initiatives, including an update of the Livable Region Strategic Plan.

So it was with some surprise that I noted a motion going to the city services and budgets committee on Tuesday (July 28), which revealed some cooperation between Vision and COPE.

One of Vision's most compassionate members of council, Kerry Jang, is calling upon the city and the province to address the negative impacts of the sex trade in Vancouver.

Jang's motion is seconded by COPE's Woodsworth, who has  demonstrated an  interest in the safety of prostitutes for years. The motion notes there are an estimated 1,000 to 2,000 people involved in sex work on the streets of Vancouver each month.

In the past, Woodsworth paid attention to the groundbreaking Living in Community project, which proposed, among other things, exit strategies for street prostitutes and a cooperative run by sex workers.

Their motion calls upon the city's general manager of community services,  David McLellan, to report back this fall on roles the city can play in dealing with street prostitution.

It also asks that Mayor Robertson  write to Premier Gordon Campbell and Health Services Minister Kevin Falcon in an effort to persuade them to fund a mobile access project provided by the  WISH Drop-in Centre  Society.

Vision rode into power last November in a landslide. But more recently, it has encountered some political challenges in dealing with a bicycle trial on the Burrard Bridge, a homeless shelter under the Granville Bridge, and growing discontent over its interactions with the park board.

Perhaps by extending the olive branch to a COPE councillor on an issue of importance to her, Vision can spread a little goodwill before the summer recess and contain  any political  waves before they develop into a tsunami.

geez ...
What exit strategy is Woodsworth proposing? Woodsworth is living on another planet. If she isn't going to send in police to rescue young Asian women entrapped into the profession at massage parlours, her exit strategy to women who can't even speak English and don't know what to do, seeing as they are illegal aliens, might as well be written on toilet paper. How do naí¯ve politicians like Ellen ever get elected?

I would highly recommend that Councillor Woodsworth read Victor Malarek's new, nonfiction book, "The Johns: Sex For Sale and the Men Who Buy It." In my opinion, she could not even begin to address the issue of sex workers' safety until she'd read and digested the contents of this hard-hitting, alarming, book. Better yet, maybe she and Malarek could meet to discuss the situation. He truly wants to protect workers whereas I've always thought that brothel proponents just want to keep women down--literally and figuratively.

Ellen got elected because she has huge community support for her hard work, not because her campaign was paid for by developers. Promoting an exit strategy for vulnerable women on the street or controlled by pimps is what we need if we want our society to be a just one. I don't think its okay to have sex trade workers preyed upon and murdered by psychopaths - is this what anyone would want for sons and daughters that can't make a living otherwise? Is this any way to treat our ESL population? We've invited immigrants to our country and, just because they don't speak English well, they don't deserve exploitation over protection from any of us. I'm glad Ellen is at city hall and working well with other politicians to find ways to give our most vulnerable a helping hand if possible.

Before we can even begin to see an End to Child Prostitution, Pornography (celluloid prostitution) and trafficking of anyone for sexual purposes we need to first change our language, our attitudes, and our very perception to this pervasive cancer that has threatened humanity for milleniums. We need to understand that prostitution is not the "Sex Trade", it is not a "career goal", nor a "career choice", there is no prostitution union, no higher learning institute where one receives a Masters Degree or PHD, it is not something one chooses to learn, though there are many predators who "groom" their prey to serve their own means. Last, but certainly not least, it has NOTHING to do with Sex and EVERYTHING to do with Violence (read: Power, Control; I Can, therefore I Will). More often than not male violence. This is an issue that has affected women and children (many of whom are male) in a most negative way; forever, and will continue to do so until Men, not Women, who are not violent with women and children, who respect women and children (and I know you are out there) stand up as a collective, shoulder to shoulder and side to side with Women and Children and Shout "We will neither tolerate nor accept your abuse."

Women around the world should be proud of themselves and take pride in knowing that we can make a difference in the lives of our fellow sisters. Education and Understanding are the best tools in the battle against womens sexual explotation.Through better communication and the sharing of information and resources we have advanced further on this issue in the last 100 years or so, than in the entire history of woman kind! Thats an amazing accomplishment ,however there is still so far we can go and I for one am going to keep fighting for Womens Rights! Fight hate and negativity with Love and Positivity! There is always hope if you believe and women can heal all!!!!
